After camping at Meiringen the night before, we made for Grimsel
and took the single track road to the free parking by the edge of
the Oberaarsee, where we made a final sort of our gear and moved
off at 12.50pm. The way led off over the dam wall and onto a track
on the right hand side of the lake.
After about 3km
we moved left onto the end of the Oberaargletscher and
started
up the ice at an easy pace. The weather was good, but an occasional
breeze over the ice was quite cold. Higher up we got into the snowline
and crevasses were evident - a party coming down almost got caught
out (just his legs went in, whilst his campanion looked on laughing
- forgetting to help him out!).
At 4.25pm we reached the Oberaarjoch
3323m with the Oberaarjochhutte on a rocky
buttress just a ladder climb away at 3258m, almost 1000m above our
starting point.
