Departing at 8:30am, we followed tracks going north round from the
back of the hut, up the left side of the Abeni Flue Firn. It has
an easy gradient, but as often seems the way when the cloud is low,
it seemed a long way.

Passing
to the east of the Mittaghorn (unseen above us), we turned to the
north west and met the other party from the hut who were on there
way back down. They had tried for the Mittaghorn, but couldn't find
the route in the cloud and so had gone for the Abeni Flue instead.
So we had tracks to follow.
As the way steepened we had to weave in and out of crevasses, but
as the gradient eased we guessed we were on the summit as everything
around us was going downhill. It was 12:07pm and we stayed there
until 12:40pm.
An easy descent was very warm as the midday heat reflected from
the snow, the clouds did nothing to cool things down. We were back
at the hut for 2:40pm.
